Sep 30,2026Peel the backing away from a sticker and press it onto a bottle, a carton or a cable, and you have just used an adhesive backed label. The principle is simple: the adhesive travels with the label, protected by a release liner until the moment somebody applies it. There is no wetting, no drying and no separate glue station on the line.
We are Zhejiang Guanma Packaging, and we have been manufacturing self-adhesive label materials in jumbo roll form for more than ten years. Over that time the same question keeps coming back from printers and packaging engineers: which combination should I actually order? The honest answer is that the phrase "adhesive backed" describes only half the story. What decides whether a label stays where it was put is the three-layer structure behind it, and how that structure behaves on the surface and in the environment where the label has to live.
Content
Every roll we produce is a sandwich, and each layer has a job to do.
Change one layer and you change the label, even if the other two stay exactly the same. A 50 micron white PET face with a solvent acrylic adhesive behaves nothing like the same face with a removable adhesive, and neither of them behaves like a paper face with a hot melt.
Adhesive chemistry is where most specification decisions are won or lost. These are the families we run most often, and the jobs they suit.
| Adhesive family | Typical jobs | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber, solvent or hot melt | Tyre labels, rough or low-energy surfaces, cold cartons | Very strong initial grab, but it softens in high heat and ages faster in sunlight |
| Water-based acrylic | Retail packaging, woodfree and thermal paper labels, indoor use | Balanced cost and ageing performance, comfortable on paper faces |
| Solvent acrylic | Outdoor signs, chemical exposure, high-temperature work | The most durable general option, and the one that costs the most |
| Hot melt | High-speed paper labelling, logistics and shipping labels | Excellent on paper and board, less convincing on smooth film |
| Removable | Promotional labels, textiles, temporary identification | Peels cleanly for months, but not from rough or dusty surfaces |
| Freezer and cold-chain grades | Frozen food, ice cream, chilled logistics | Formulated to grab on cold or damp surfaces and to stay flexible |
| UV and specialty grades | Film labels needing abrasion or chemical resistance | Needs correct curing and a face material that suits the process |
A useful rule of thumb: the harder the surface and the harsher the environment, the more you should lean toward solvent acrylic or a dedicated specialty adhesive. Easy indoor paper work rarely needs that level of durability, and paying for it simply raises the cost per roll.
Face material choice usually comes down to three questions. Is the surface wet? Is it curved or squeezable? Does the label have to survive chemicals, heat or sunlight?
Everyday bottles and containers are a good example of the middle ground, where smooth printing and reliable adhesion matter more than extreme durability.

That material pairs a bright, smooth PP face with a permanent adhesive, which is why it turns up again and again on cosmetic, household and beverage packaging lines.
General purpose work is only part of the picture. Most of our customers come to us because a standard label failed somewhere specific.
Cold surfaces are unforgiving. Moisture on the pack, condensation as the product moves and temperatures well below freezing all work against a normal adhesive. A frozen grade has to stay tacky and flexible at low temperature, and the face material has to resist the damp conditions of a cold store without curling at the edges.

Sunlight, rain, temperature swings and the occasional chemical splash call for a different answer. Here a thicker, tougher film face combined with a UV-resistant adhesive keeps the label legible and attached through a full season of weather rather than a few weeks.

Some applications are less about weather and more about the physics or chemistry of what the label touches. It is worth raising these early, because a small change in adhesive or liner usually solves them.
Printers often ask whether a material is compatible with their press. The adhesive rarely cares how the ink arrives, but the face stock certainly does. This is why the same adhesive appears behind a dozen different top coatings.
Get the coating right and the print quality follows. Get it wrong and you will see ragged edges, patchy solids or ink that rubs off in transit.
When you buy in jumbo roll form, the specification is written as a sequence, and it is worth reading it the same way every time.
Written in that order, quotations become easy to compare and fewer surprises reach the press. If you are unsure which combination fits your application, describe the surface, the storage conditions and the print process to us and we will come back with a recommendation rather than a catalogue.
Send us your specification and we will match the face, adhesive and liner to the job.
None of these points is glamorous, and all of them are cheaper than a reprint.
Adhesive backed labels are a small part of a finished product and a surprisingly large part of how it performs on the shelf and in the field. Get the three layers right and almost everything else becomes easier, from printing to application to the way the label looks after six months of real life.
If you would like to compare materials side by side or work through a specific application, take a look at our range of self-adhesive label materials and tell us what the label has to survive.
We have a professional R&D team and strong manufacturing capabilities to ensure product quality and delivery while doing a good job in product iteration and innovation.
